RCA May Pontefract 2017

At the beginning of the year Pontefract Racecourse embarked on a challenging improvement scheme to their Parade Ring. The old parade ring was on a substantial slope with a post and 2 rail wood fence around the perimeter. A huge amount of thought and planning had to go into the new design to ensure a safer paddock that satisfied BHA guidelines. The new paddock comprises of Fornells Crowd barrier with 10100 running rail around the paddock, safety gates leading to the winner’s enclosure, 3 new walkways into the paddock and new cushion mat flooring throughout.
Watt Fences supplied all of the Fornells products and spent 6 weeks installing them all ready for their opening meeting on the 11th April. Fornells Crowd Barrier and Running Rail are in use at numerous racecourses, show and sports grounds across the UK and they have an exemplary safety record and appearance; they are an excellent product for use in all public areas. Both products are made from long-life PVC materials and they are available in different formats according to the location and available budgets. A range of Fornells gates are available to suit all requirements of running rail and crowd barrier.
Pontefract’s Managing Director, Norman Gundill, said: ‘Bill Watt and his team were excellent, firstly in helping to devise solutions to the unique problems that the location of our Parade Ring caused and secondly in carrying out all the work. They also worked in harmony with all other contractors and especially our ground staff who had a great deal to do levelling surrounding areas, turfing, preparing the ground for the hedging between the crowd and running rails, putting up signage, tidying up and attending to the minor but essential final details. The scheme has received universal praise and we are delighted with it.’
