Despite having one of the shortest racing seasons, Cartmel Racecourse attracts some of the largest crowds in British racing. As many as 20,000 people, including children, might attend the main Bank Holiday fixtures.
The racing takes place against the beautiful backdrop of the Lake District and the racecourse itself just a few yards away from the medieval village square and 12th Century Priory. There is a small grandstand, but the course has few permanent facilities and much of the infrastructure is built for each meeting in May, June, July and August. One large hospitality marquee is erected for the summer season.
The spectators watch from the centre of the course, where many enjoy picnics and barbecues next to their vehicles. The finishing straight bisects the circuit, dividing the centre of the course into two enclosures: on one side you’ll find the Parade Ring and Winners Enclosure, on the other there is an enormous fairground. This year Cartmel have ordered a range of temporary and permanent fencing from Watt Fences.
PVC picket fencing and gates have been used to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the main pedestrian entrance, as well as to secure the outer perimeter of the new horse wash-down area. Mobile post and rail barriers have been employed at key crossing points, where race goers enter the enclosures, helping to protect the racing surface. Meanwhile, a semi-permanent post and rail barrier was erected three metres from the crowd barrier in front of the track; thereby restricting the creep of vehicles and gazebos up to the running rail – maintaining a corridor for spectators to move freely and view the races. Watt Fences sell a wide range of PVC fencing and barrier products including picket fencing, post and rail fencing and temporary fencing so now you can have the look of wood combined with the durability and long life of vinyl in one terrific fence product. This eliminates the costly effort of painting or staining and will not blister, peel, corrode or rot. The durable all weather vinyl maintains a fresh appearance year after year and is five times stronger and four times more elastic than wood. If you are looking to fence a small garden or even a large sports ground our PVC fencing is an affordable and practical choice, economically priced for even the largest application.
Jonathan Garratt, Managing Director of Cartmel Racecourse, is very pleased to recommend the Watt Fences products, “They are durable, smart and have a variety of uses, making them one of the best investments we have made in recent years.”
