Picket Fencing: Why Vinyl is Better

Traditional Picket Fencing

Picket fencing has long been the choice of the traditional suburban home, as well as on showgrounds. It’s a classic design and for many people, it connotes tranquillity and even wealth and evokes many positive memories for some people, who remember it featuring in their childhood garden. The traditional look of picket fencing is one of the reasons why many showgrounds opt to use it.

Vinyl or Wooden Picket Fencing

Traditionally, picket fencing would have been made from wood, since it has existed for longer than plastic has. Increasingly though, PVC has become more affordable and although it is still generally more expensive than wood, consumers are beginning to realise that PVC picket fencing is worth the initial outlay.

Unlike wood, vinyl picket fencing, or indeed any type of fencing made from PVC is likely to be more durable than wood. The material is more elastic and stronger than wood, reducing the likelihood of breakages. One of the other properties of vinyl which wood does not share is that it does not absorb moisture from the air. This of course means that it cannot blister, peel or rot like a poorly maintained wooden fence might.

PVC picket fencing keeps its pristine appearance year after year, regardless of the weather. Wood, on the other hand, needs to be repainted regularly because wet weather is likely to make paint peel and the wood below rot. When asked, most people whether at home or on the showground will say that they chose PVC picket fencing in order to minimise ongoing maintenance.
